About Jan's Electorate

Jan is a Labor Senator for Queensland with an office in Cairns. She represents Federal Labor in the North Queensland electorates of Herbert and Kennedy. If you live in any of these electorates and have a problem or concern with the Federal Government Jan may be able to assist you. Herbert

TownsvilleHerbert is named after Sir Robert Herbert (1831 - 1905) the first Premier of Queensland.

Herbert is based around the twin cities of Townsville and Thuringowa and also includes Magnetic and Palm Islands.

The seat has a diverse economy with major private sector employers including copper, nickel and zinc refineries, and meat processing. Major Government employers include the Australian Defence Force who have establishments at Lavarack Barracks (Army) and Garbutt (RAAF), and James Cook University and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. Townsville is also the regional head quarters for a large number of State and Federal Government Departments. Other important economic drivers are tourism, primary industries including sugar, beef, fishing and tropical fruits and the retail and building industries.

 


Kennedy

Mustering cattle in the GulfKennedy is named after Edmund Kennedy (1818 - 1848), an early explorer in the area.

Major towns include Atherton, Babinda, Camooweal, Charters Towers, Cloncurry, Georgetown, Gordonvale, Hughenden, Ingham, Innisfail, Mareeba, Mount Isa, Normanton and Tully.

Mining is the major industry in the elctorate with significant mines in the North West Mineral Province. Copper, gold, silver, tin, lead, zinc, coal and marble are all produced.

Primary industries include beef cattle, sheep, grains, cotton, sugar, horticulture, tobacco and fishing.

Tourism is well established on the coast and Atherton Tablelands and is growing significantly in the west.
